(Simple) Turmeric Yellow Rice
Like most humans, I’m a creature of habit. Admittedly, I’m most comfortable when I have an established routine.
For example, at the gym, 9.5 times out of 10, I pick the same locker. If it is occupied already, it annoys me. Why is that? I don’t know. It just does.
Same thing happens with the treadmill. Yes, my gym has more than one treadmill but I use the same treadmill every time. Not to mention the stationary bike, that particular spot in the stretching area, etc.
In my mind, once I’ve found a good thing or found something that works, there’s no reason to change it. Some people might find it boring, I find it comforting.
However, when it comes to food I’m the opposite of a creature of habit.
At a particular restaurant, I will never get the same thing twice. I’ll order something new and different. Most of the time, I’ll try a different restaurant instead of going to the same one.
At home I like to experiment: Try new recipes or tweak with an old one. How boring does it get to make the same thing over and over again?
However, there are some foods that are a staple across all the cuisines of the world and that are difficult to jazz it up. Such as white rice.
I eat rice 2 to 3 times per week as a side to meals like Chickpea Tikka Masala, Broccoli and Beef or Orange Chicken. There’s no denying that white rice is the perfect side dish.
But sometimes it’s nice to give it a new spin.
This Turmeric Yellow Rice is one of my favorite alternatives.
Not only is it delicious, but it’s super easy to throw together. It doesn’t require more effort than making plain white rice.
Traditional yellow rice recipes require chopping and sauteing, but I’ve cut a few corners so that I can have this prepped in under 5 minutes. And you can even make it in the rice cooker, if you have one.
Full of aromatics flavors and good for you too, thanks to the turmeric and the ginger.
It makes for a refined side dish or it can be a meal on its own — you know for those nights when you feel that a bowl of rice is just the thing.
One final note, just don’t make the mistake of adding too much turmeric, otherwise the flavor will be too strong and will also be on the bitter side.

Serves 4 as a side
Ingredients
1 cup basmati rice (rinsed)
½ teaspoon ground turmeric
¼ teaspoon ground ginger
½ teaspoon salt
2 cups water
½ tablespoon butter or coconut oil (optional but highly recommended)
Directions
In a medium pot combine rice, turmeric, ginger, salt, water, and butter (or coconut oil) if using.
Cover with a lid and bring to a gentle boil. Reduce to a low simmer and cook (covered) for 12 to 14 minutes or until the liquid has been absorbed.
Remove from the heat and let sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Fluff with a fork and serve.
If you’re using a rice cooker combine all the ingredients and cook using the ‘white rice’ function. Once the time is up, fluff with a fork and serve.
